What is Varicocele? Symptoms, Causes and Treatment
Varicocele is the enlargement of testicular veins. It is one of the most common causes of male infertility. Successfully treated with microsurgical varicocelectomy.
What is Varicocele?
Varicocele is the abnormal enlargement and dilation of veins (pampiniform plexus) in the scrotum. It occurs in approximately 15-20% of men and is the most common treatable cause of male infertility.
Symptoms
- Dull testicular pain, worsening with standing
- Heaviness in the scrotum
- Palpable mass ("bag of worms" feeling)
- Testicular atrophy
- Infertility
Grading
- Grade 1: Detected only with ultrasound
- Grade 2: Palpable with Valsalva maneuver
- Grade 3: Visible and palpable on examination
Treatment: Microsurgical Varicocelectomy
Microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy is the gold standard treatment. Performed under surgical microscope through a small 2-3 cm incision. Lowest recurrence rate (1-2%), same-day discharge, and natural pregnancy rates of 40-60% post-surgery.
