What is Robotic Pyeloplasty?

UPJ (Ureteropelvic Junction) obstruction is the narrowing of the transition area between the kidney pelvis and the ureter. This obstruction can block urine flow, causing hydronephrosis (urine accumulation) in the kidney and loss of kidney function.

Robotic pyeloplasty is a reconstructive surgery in which the narrowed area is excised and the urinary flow path is corrected by performing a new anastomosis (reconnection). The da Vinci system provides extraordinary precision, especially in this procedure that requires suturing.

Surgical Procedure

• Under general anesthesia, small port incisions are made in the lateral decubitus position.
• Robotic arms and a 3D camera are placed, and the kidney pelvis is exposed.
• The stenotic segment is excised (Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty).
• The kidney pelvis and ureter are reconnected with watertight sutures.
• A JJ stent is placed and removed after 4-6 weeks.
