Kidney Stone Surgery: Modern Treatment Methods
Modern methods such as ESWL, ureteroscopy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy are used in kidney stone surgery. Incision-free and minimally invasive treatment options in Izmir.
What is Kidney Stone Surgery?
Kidney stone surgery involves treating kidney stones that cannot be passed with conservative treatment or that cause complications. Today, open surgery has been almost completely abandoned, and minimally invasive and incision-free methods have become the standard treatment.
When is Surgery Necessary?
- Stones larger than 5mm that don't pass spontaneously
- Recurrent severe pain episodes
- Stone blocking urine flow (hydronephrosis)
- Development of urinary tract infection
- Beginning of kidney function loss
- Bilateral kidney stones
ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy)
Focused sound waves applied from outside the body break kidney stones into small fragments. Suitable for stones smaller than 2 cm with 70-90% success rate. No incision, outpatient procedure.
Ureteroscopic Stone Surgery (URS / RIRS)
A thin endoscope is inserted through the urinary tract to reach and break stones with laser. Rigid ureteroscopy for ureteral stones, flexible ureteroscopy (RIRS) for intrarenal stones. Success rate: 90-95%.
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PNL)
Large stones are fragmented and removed through an approximately 1 cm incision in the back. Suitable for stones larger than 2 cm and staghorn calculi. Success rate: 85-95%.
