Partial Nephrectomy: Nephron-Sparing Surgery
Partial nephrectomy removes the kidney tumor while preserving healthy tissue. Applied with millimetric precision using robotic surgery. Preservation of kidney function is the main advantage.
What is Partial Nephrectomy?
Partial nephrectomy (nephron-sparing surgery) is the removal of only the tumor portion of the kidney while preserving healthy tissue. This approach maximizes kidney function preservation and reduces the long-term risk of chronic kidney disease.
When is Partial Nephrectomy Performed?
- T1a tumors: Standard treatment for tumors smaller than 4 cm
- T1b tumors: Tumors 4-7 cm when anatomically feasible
- Solitary kidney patients
- Bilateral kidney tumors
- Patients at risk for chronic kidney disease
Robotic Partial Nephrectomy
Partial nephrectomy with the da Vinci robotic system has become the gold standard, offering 3D magnified imaging, millimetric precision, shorter ischemia time, and minimal complications.
Surgical Steps
- General anesthesia, lateral position
- 4-5 trocar placement (8-12mm)
- Kidney mobilization
- Renal artery clamping (warm ischemia)
- Tumor excision with safe margins
- Renorrhaphy (kidney closure)
Recovery
- Day 1: Mobilization and oral intake
- Day 2-3: Drain removal and discharge
- 2 weeks: Light activities
- 4-6 weeks: Full activity
