Radical nephrectomy is the surgical removal of the entire cancerous kidney along with surrounding fat tissue and, if necessary, the adrenal gland. Can be performed minimally invasively with robotic surgery.
What is Radical Nephrectomy?
Radical nephrectomy is the complete removal of the cancerous kidney along with Gerota's fascia, perirenal fat, and when necessary, the ipsilateral adrenal gland. Preferred for large tumors (>7 cm) or centrally located tumors.
Robotic Radical Nephrectomy
Using the da Vinci robotic system, radical nephrectomy offers significant advantages: 4-5 small 8mm incisions, 3D magnified imaging, less blood loss, shorter hospital stay (2-3 days), and faster recovery (2-3 weeks).
Recovery
- Day 1: Mobilization, fluid intake
- Day 2-3: Oral nutrition, walking
- Day 3-4: Discharge
- 2 weeks: Light activities
- 4-6 weeks: Full activity
